In short
Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, also built into Google Workspace. Verbatim gives you a team of AI agents for research, analysis and writing. It was built first for journalists. Its agents work on a whole project, for hours or for weeks: monitoring, reading, finding people, interview preparation, live checking and writing in your style. Every fact stays tied to its source, and Verbatim records the origin of every line. In the consumer Gemini app, conversations are used for training when activity is kept. Verbatim hosts your content in Europe and never uses it to train third-party AI.
This page compares Gemini and Verbatim on the criteria of journalistic work: style, sources, the origin and marking of the text, interviews, data and pricing. The information on Gemini comes from Google’s official pages.
Verbatim and Gemini, point by point
| Criterion | Verbatim | Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Demanding research, analysis and writing, starting with journalism. Agents work on a whole project, for hours or for weeks, and check each other’s work. | Google’s personal AI assistant, also built into the Google Workspace tools. |
| Style | A proprietary style engine, developed with linguists. It measures dozens of features in everything you have published and rewrites a wire story or a rough draft the way you would. Every correction refines your style profile. | Gems: instructions and reference files. From November 2026, Gems on personal accounts become “skills”. |
| Research and sources | The agents search the web and public registers, and read every page they find from start to finish. A proprietary algorithm ties every fact to the exact excerpt it comes from. Every claim gets a status: Supported, Contradicted or Not found. | A Sources button shows the links behind the answer. |
| Origin and marking of the text | Verbatim records the origin of every line: you, the AI or a source. The record is ready when the AI Act requires it. | Google’s help centre describes no tracking of the origin of passages. Canvas keeps a version history. SynthID watermark on text from the Gemini app. Google states that it works less well on factual answers and on text that has been rewritten or translated. |
| Interviews | In interviews, press conferences and meetings, Verbatim transcribes every word and checks every sentence as it is spoken. It also transcribes imported recordings, in most languages. | Audio uploads: 10 minutes in total on the free plan, 3 hours with Google AI Pro or Ultra. In Workspace, Google Meet transcription from Business Standard upwards. |
| Data | Content hosted and processed in Europe. It is never used to train third-party AI. A specialist cybersecurity firm oversees Verbatim’s security. | Consumer app: conversations used for training when activity is kept, and human review of some conversations. Workspace: no training outside the customer’s domain without permission. |
| Price | VerbatimAgent: €49.95, €99.95 or €149.95 a month, VAT included, with a 14-day free trial. VerbatimOS: €109 to €249 a month. Fixed price, with no AI usage fees. | Google AI Plus €4.99, Google AI Pro €21.99 a month. Workspace: €6.80 to €21.10 per user per month, excluding VAT, billed annually. |
When to choose Verbatim
Verbatim is built for these cases:
- a subject has to be followed for weeks, with monitoring day and night;
- every claim in a text has to be matched with its source;
- the newsroom needs to know which lines come from the AI;
- the work starts from recorded interviews, documents and people to track down;
- the journalist wants texts written in their own style.
When Gemini is enough
Gemini is enough to rephrase, summarise or look up information on the web, with links to the sources. In a newsroom equipped with Google Workspace, it works inside the suite’s tools. For a confidential document, the Workspace offer excludes human review and training outside the domain.
Questions
Does Gemini keep my conversations?
In the consumer app, when activity is kept, conversations are used to improve Google’s services, including for training. Conversations reviewed by humans are kept for up to three years. When activity is not kept, conversations are kept for 72 hours.
Does the SynthID watermark replace the notice to readers?
No. SynthID marks the text so that a machine can detect it. Article 50 of the AI Act also requires the newsroom to tell readers when a text of public interest is generated by AI, unless it has been reviewed by a person and someone holds editorial responsibility.
Is Gemini in Workspace different?
Yes. In Workspace, Google states that conversations are not reviewed by humans and that models are not trained outside the customer’s domain without permission. Depending on the edition, data regions cover queries and responses.
