In short
Verbatim runs on a proprietary algorithm that ties every fact to the exact excerpt it comes from. It checks every sentence of your drafts against those sources, continuously. Each claim receives a status: Supported, Contradicted, Not found or Checking. Any claim it cannot trace to a source is rejected. Clicking a sentence opens its excerpt.
Chatbots predict the most likely next word. When a fact is missing, they make one up and present it as true. Verbatim’s agents work from your sources and bring back the proof for every result.
Every fact tied to its excerpt
Every fact the agents find stays tied to the exact place in its source. For a document, that is the page and the line. For a recording, it is the minute and the second. For a spreadsheet, it is the cell.
In a draft, clicking a sentence opens its excerpt in place, with the lines around it. In the example of an investigation into a plant, the sentence “The plant spent 1.2 million on safety in 2023” opens the 2023 annual report at page 41.
Every sentence checked, continuously
The Checking agent rereads every sentence against the project’s sources. It verifies that each source says what the text attributes to it. It runs the check again whenever the text changes or a new source arrives. It also checks the other agents’ work: a finding from monitoring, an answer from the Reading agent, a sentence in the first draft.
Every claim carries one of four statuses:
- Supported: an excerpt confirms the sentence.
- Contradicted: an excerpt says something else.
- Not found: no source contains the fact.
- Checking: the check is still running.
Claims without a source are rejected
Verbatim rejects any claim it cannot trace to a source. The sentence is flagged in the margin of the draft. In the plant example, the sentence “Unit 3 was upgraded in 2023” leads to no excerpt. Verbatim rejects it.
Contradictions, side by side
The agents flag contradictions inside a draft and between sources. When two sources disagree, Verbatim shows both excerpts side by side. You choose the version the draft keeps.
In the plant example, the chief executive announces four million in safety spending for 2023. The company’s annual report gives 1.2 million.
A fact, an analysis, an opinion
Statuses apply to factual claims: a figure, a date, a name, a quote, an event. An analysis, an opinion or a figure of speech never receives a fact status.
The origin of every line
Verbatim records the origin of every line in a text: you, the AI or a source. The record is ready when the AI Act requires it. In VerbatimOS, the AI Act report covers the whole team.
Questions
Can Verbatim invent a source?
No. Every fact points to an excerpt you can open: a page, a minute of a recording or a cell. A claim without an excerpt is rejected.
Does verification work outside journalism?
Yes. It applies to all four project types: journalism, long-form writing, analysis and research. A credit note, a chapter or a literature review receives the same statuses.
Are my sources used to train AI?
No. Your content is hosted and processed in Europe. It is never used to train third-party AI.
