Style engine: your style, learned from your published work

Updated on 16 October 2026

In short

Verbatim’s style engine is a proprietary technology, developed with linguists. It measures dozens of features in everything you have published, from the length of your sentences to the way you quote people. You send it a wire story or a rough draft. It rewrites it the way you would. Every correction you make refines your style profile.

A general-purpose assistant writes in a generic style. A text published under your name should read like the rest of your work. Verbatim learns your style from what you have already published.

Developed with linguists

The style engine was developed with linguists. It reads everything you have published and measures dozens of features, including:

  • sentence and paragraph length
  • the way you quote people
  • attribution verbs, such as “said”, “told” or “according to”
  • register
  • the share of passive voice
  • punctuation and vocabulary

Together, these measurements make up your style profile. You find it in Settings, under “Your style”.

A wire story or a draft, rewritten your way

You paste a wire story or a draft into the agents panel. The Writing agent rewrites it in your style, at the length you ask for. Every fact in the rewritten text keeps its source. The Checking agent checks every sentence.

In the example of an investigation into a plant, the wire story repeats the operator’s announcement: four million invested in safety. The rewritten version starts from the company’s annual report, which gives 1.2 million. It then quotes the chief executive’s figure.

One wire story, several styles

The engine rewrites the same wire story for each profile. For a daily newspaper, sentences are short and attribution verbs are plain. For a magazine long read, sentences are longer and the register is higher. A policy brief opens with the key finding and ends with the recommended action. An academic article uses a highly formal register and more passive voice.

Every correction refines the profile

When you correct a rewritten text, the engine records the correction. If you replace “claims” with “says”, your profile applies that choice to the texts that follow. The profile updates after each correction. You can review and edit the rules it has learned in Settings.

A house style for a newsroom or a team

With VerbatimOS, the engine calibrates the house style on the archives of your newsroom or team. We do this calibration on site, when we set Verbatim up. Every member of the team then writes in that style, with the house templates.

Your profile belongs to you

Your style profile belongs to your account. It only serves your agents. Your texts are never used to train third-party AI. If you leave, your data leaves with you.

Questions

Can the engine write for several publications?

Yes. Each profile is measured on its own texts: a daily newspaper, a magazine, a policy brief or an academic article. You choose the profile before the rewrite.

Does the rewritten text keep its sources?

Yes. Every fact keeps its excerpt. The Checking agent checks every sentence. A claim without a source is rejected.

Can I rewrite a single paragraph?

Yes. You select the text and choose an action, such as Tighten or Clarify. The Writing agent suggests a version in your style. You accept or reject it.

Which languages does it write in?

Verbatim writes in the language you choose. It reads, transcribes and translates documents and recordings in most languages.
