Interview transcription: from recording to exact quote

Updated on 16 October 2026

In short

Verbatim transcribes your interviews, press conferences and meetings in most languages. It separates the voices and timestamps every passage. The transcript joins the sources of your project, linked to the original recording. Every quote is copied word for word and tied to its exact excerpt. In a live session, Verbatim transcribes every word and checks every sentence as it is spoken.

Transcribing an hour-long interview takes time, and a single transcription error can distort a quote. Verbatim transcribes the recording, files the quotes and keeps each quote linked to the transcript and the audio.

Import or record

You import an audio file (MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, FLAC or WebM) or a video. You can also record from Verbatim. The built-in recorder has no time limit. It stops when you stop it. You can drop the file onto any screen, or ask Verbatim to transcribe the interview and file it in a project.

A timestamped transcript, voice by voice

Verbatim detects the language of the recording. It transcribes most languages, including French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Arabic. You can set the language yourself and run the transcription again. The voices are separated, and the transcript shows “Speaker 1”, “Speaker 2”. Every passage carries its timestamp. No name replaces a speaker until you confirm it. Verbatim can also translate the transcript into the language you choose.

Exact quotes

A quote is copied word for word from the transcript. It is tied to its excerpt only if the text appears there exactly. Every quote keeps its timestamp, such as 00:12:41, and a click opens the recording at that second. Every quote has a status: ON by default, or OFF. In Verbatim, an OFF quote can be used without naming the source. Quotes are filed in the project’s Sources tab and on the page of the person who said them.

The session and the first draft

Every interview, press conference or meeting has its own page in the project’s Sessions tab. That page brings together the recording, the transcript, the quotes and the follow-ups. The Writing agent turns it into a first draft in your style, in the Create tab. Every quote in the draft points to its minute in the recording. The “Share” button gives another account read and comment access to the project, sessions included.

Live

The “Start live” button transcribes an interview, a press conference or a meeting in real time. Verbatim checks every sentence as it is spoken, against your documents, your sources, the web and everything that person has said before. When an answer contradicts your documents, the excerpt that proves it appears while the person is still talking. You follow the session on the web, or listen in on iPhone.

Questions

Does the transcription tell the voices apart?

Yes. Voice separation is on by default. The transcript shows “Speaker 1”, “Speaker 2”. You then confirm who is speaking, and the name replaces the number.

Is there a time limit?

No. A file is never rejected because of its length. The built-in recorder stops when you stop it.

How reliable is automatic transcription?

It can get a proper name, a figure or a muffled passage wrong. Every passage keeps its timestamp, and a click opens the recording at the right moment. You listen to the sentence again before you quote it.

Where are my recordings processed?

In Europe. Your recordings are hosted and processed there. Your content is never used to train third-party AI. If you leave, your data leaves with you.
